Annually

Heartworm prevention should be given year round to prevent heartworms and several intestinal parasites. A blood test for Heartworms should be preformed yearly even if your dog is on preventative. This condition is much easier to prevent than it is to treat!

Seasonal

Flea and tick prevention should be used from April through December at a minimum. Ticks can live in the winter and it never gets too cold for these pests once they get inside your home! Using flea & tick prevention year round is often the best way to prevent an infestation.

Winter

Our canine family members can get the flu too! Keep them protected by vaccinating them against Canine Influenza.

Special caution should be taken near the holidays when pets are more likely to get into and ingest things they shouldn’t like chocolate and tinsel. Keep goodies out of reach of pets and make sure ribbons, tinsel and lights aren’t being snacked on by curious animal companions.

Summer

Bordetella, commonly known as kennel cough, is highly contagious between dogs. Most kennels require this vaccine be given every 6 months if your dog is to board with them. Check with your veterinarian early to make sure all your pets are up to date on all their vaccines before heading to your kennel.

Heat stroke is an emergency that requires immediate recognition and prompt treatment. Dogs especially do not tolerate high temperatures as well as humans. Do NOT leave your pets in a car in hot weather or outside with no shade. A body temperature of 106 F or more can be fatal.
