Hickory Veterinary Hospital is a 20,000 sq ft state of the art veterinary complex situated on 10 acres of ground in historic Plymouth Meeting, PA. We are just 20 minutes from Philadelphia with easy access from the Pennsylvania Turnpike, Schuylkill Expressway and the 476 Blue Route. Hickory Veterinary Hospital is an AAHA accredited hospital that serves over 7,000 companion animal patients annually. Our board-certified specialists offer a broad range of diagnostic and treatment options in the fields of, surgery, oncology, critical care, ophthalmology, neurology, dermatology and radiology. The hospital’s 75-person staff includes 5 board-certified specialists, 4 emergency care veterinarians, a veterinarian certified in canine rehabilitation and acupuncture, certified veterinary technologists, animal tech assistants, client care team and administrative personnel.

  • Outpatient Technician

    Perform variety of animal health care duties to assist our primary care veterinarians.
    Some of the outpatient technician’s responsibilities include:
    •    Greet Clients and set up doctor appointments.
    •    Take patient history and triage
    •    Administer injections
    •    Perform venipuncture
    •    Apply wound dressings
    •    Hold or restrain patients during examination, treatment, or inoculation
    •    Prepare patient, medications, and equipment
    •    Perform diagnostic laboratory tests
    •    Review vaccine history, heartworm and flea preventative


  • ICU/ER Technicians

    Perform variety of animal health care duties to assist our ICU/emergency veterinarians.
    Some of the ICU/ER technician’s responsibilities include:
    •    Provide emergency/critical care procedure with the emergency doctor
    •    Provide nursing care for hospitalized patients
    •    Run laboratory and diagnostic tests
    •    Monitor equipment used for hospitalized patients
    •    Assist with physical examinations
    •    Contact clients for follow up on treated patients
    •    Update clients on patient’ conditions


  • Surgical Technicians

    Perform variety of animal health care duties to assist our surgeons
    Some of the surgical technician’s responsibilities include:
    •    Assist in preparations for surgical procedures (soft tissue, orthopedic, emergency and elective)
    •    Monitor patients under anesthesia
    •    Run laboratory and diagnostic tests
    •    Post operative care of patients
    •    Equipment care for surgery
    •    Discharge patients

  • Internships

    Pennsylvania Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Associates is a well-established veterinary practice located in Historic Plymouth Meeting, PA, about 20 minutes from Philadelphia. In 2009, we opened an additional 10,000 square feet of hospital space where we will continue to offer the most current procedures and state-of-the-art equipment and care to our patients.

    Pennsylvania Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Associates is a 24-hour emergency and critical care facility, specialty practice, internal medicine, and house call service that employs approximately 16 veterinarians. We offer the most current procedures and state-of-the-art equipment. Our medicine practitioners are highly trained to handle all routine treatments and surgeries, as well as comprehensive procedures and emergencies. Our specialty practice includes full-time board certified and board-eligible specialists in surgery, oncology, critical care, emergency, cardiology, neurology, radiology and ophthalmology. Additional services include general medicine, and animal rehabilitation. As a result, interns are exposed to a diverse caseload. Our internship program offers rotations through each of the specialties, general medicine, and the emergency service.

    Our practice sees referral cases in the areas of surgery, oncology, critical care, radiology/ultrasound/ CT, internal medicine, neurology, rehabilitation, and cardiology with other specialty services expected to be added soon. Additionally, we have a busy, progressive general medicine which provides wellness care as well as management of a wide range of illnesses. Our emergency and critical care service runs 24 hours a day and is well established in our geographic area. Current equipment and services include digital radiology, CT, MR,I ultrasonography, echocardiography, ECG, video endoscopy (including multiple flexible endoscopes as well as rigid scopes for laparoscopy), chemotherapy, oxygen cages, direct and indirect blood pressure monitoring, multiple monitors, in-house lab (including CBC, chemistries, blood gases and coagulation profiles), and more.

    Interns rotate through each of the various hospital services. Additionally, we are able to arrange elective rotations at nearby or regional specialty practices allowing time to focus on specialties not available at our hospital. Interns are expected to be highly motivated individuals capable of handling a heavy caseload while assuming primary care responsibility for their patients. However this is very much a team practice and help and guidance are always close by. Our goal is to prepare interns for the next stage of their career.

    Interns can expect direct contact with specialists and senior staff members who provide guidance and support. Regular continuing education will include a blend of journal clubs, morbidity and mortality rounds and sit-down case discussion rounds. Additionally several regional all-day CE presentations are given by nationally recognized speakers on state-of-the-art topics. Interns will be expected to periodically make presentations on clinical cases or topics to the staff doctors and technicians.

    The compensation package includes a salary of $30,000. Our benefits include vacation, paid sick time, co-paid health insurance, continuing education, dues, etc. A Pennsylvania veterinary license is required.

    A hospital visit and personal interview are encouraged.

    Program Protocol
    First handout is the Pennsylvania Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Associates Hickory Veterinary Hospital Technician Externship Program informational sheets. This handout would be packaged in separate folders and mailed or dropped off at Harcum College, Manor College or any other affiliated veterinary technician schools whose veterinary technician students would be interested in interviewing with us for an externship program.

    Attached to the introduction handout are the guidelines of tasks and responsibilities that will be observed during the students’ externship.

    It consists of two sections.

    First section is evaluation of general responsibilities.

    Hospital Ward Tasks

    We would interview the students for the externship program. After selecting the student or students for the program, we would discuss a schedule that would allow the student to shadow a senior technician during their rotations. The student would be given a packet with the following information.

    1)    A check list with daily, weekly and monthly responsibilities. This list has detail listing of basic housekeeping duties that will show the student locations of products, importance of cleanliness and overall care of the hospital.

    2)    A final assessment letter to be completed by the employer/supervisor and returned to the program director or assistant program director at the end of the completed externship. The guidelines lists attached to the introduction handout would be filled out as well and submitted with this final assessment letter.  It can be reviewed with the student at the discretion of the employer/supervisor as deemed necessary or faxed/emailed to the director /assisting director directly.

    This would complete the externship program for the student.  We may offer an opportunity to be employed at Pennsylvania Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Associates Hickory Veterinary Hospital if the student is interested and if we feel they qualify for the position available.
